The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Executive Committee has greenlit a series of infrastructure and security contracts aimed at boosting urban development across the nation’s capital. The approvals were made during the Committee’s third meeting of the year, presided over by FCT Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Chief Felix Obuah, Coordinator of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC), disclosed that key contracts were awarded for the operation and maintenance of the Apo Erector, and an extension of services at the Wupa Basic Sewage Treatment Plant. Obuah also announced a two-month extension for solid waste collection and management across 40 districts of the FCT, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to enhancing sanitation and urban maintenance.

Streetlight Overhaul for Ring Road 1

Providing further details, Acting Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Engr. Richard Yunana Dauda, revealed that one of the major contracts involves the overhaul of streetlighting on the 14-kilometre Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway (Ring Road 1). Installed over 15 years ago, the existing lights will be replaced with a modern hybrid system to enhance nighttime visibility and security.

Security and Pedestrian Control Measures

In a move to improve public safety and urban aesthetics, Dauda said the EXCO also approved the installation of pedestrian access controls at 12 strategic interchanges across the capital. The project involves fencing green areas with mesh wire and constructing designated walkways to limit unauthorized access, discourage open defecation, and prevent loitering by miscreants.

District Upgrades and New Magistrate Court

More developments are on the horizon for districts like Durumi and Mabushi. Contracts were awarded for the construction of 1.7 kilometers of access roads, drainage systems, and culverts in Durumi. In Mabushi, new infrastructure will include road networks, street lighting, underground drainage, and vital utilities such as water and sewage systems.

The Committee also approved the construction of a new Magistrate Court in Jabi, adding to two others previously sanctioned for Asokoro and Garki.

Erosion Control and Security Infrastructure

Highlighting urgent interventions, Dauda disclosed that an emergency erosion control project was successfully executed near critical water pipelines from the Lower Usuma Dam, which supplies water to Kubwa, the airport, and Gwagwalada. Chinese firm CGC handled the project to prevent further damage to the vital water infrastructure.

“The erosion had threatened major pipelines feeding storage tanks in Kubwa and Gwagwalada,” Dauda said. “The emergency work by CGC has now been completed, safeguarding our water supply network.”

In addition, the Department of State Security (DSS) headquarters in Abuja is set to undergo renovation and technical upgrades, following another contract approval by the Committee.
