Labour Party Crisis Deepens as Nenadi Usman Challenges Julius Abure’s Threats

The Caretaker Committee Chairperson of the Labour Party (LP), Nenadi Usman, has boldly confronted factional National Chairman Julius Abure over his recent threat to expose prominent party figures, including Peter Obi and Alex Otti. The confrontation escalates the ongoing leadership tussle within the party.

Abure had on Monday challenged Obi, the LP’s 2023 presidential candidate, and Otti, the Abia State Governor, to name party members allegedly involved in mishandling 2023 election funds. “I am waiting for them, from top to bottom, to make any other move, and I will open my mouth,” Abure warned. “And when I open my mouth, wherever they go, they will be like smelly eggs, rotten eggs that nobody will ever buy.”

Responding on Friday, Usman dismissed Abure’s threats, daring him to present any evidence. “I am challenging him to expose us. If you have anybody to expose, you don’t go and talk now, you go and expose them,” she said. Usman countered that the party holds records of Abure’s conduct, some of which are under police investigation. “We have a lot of things about him, and that is why the people he did it to went to the police. The police are investigating him, and very soon you will hear about it,” she added.

The former Finance Minister labeled the internal crisis an assault on democracy, stating, “Every democracy needs a vibrant opposition. So when the opposition wants to become part of the ruling party, then there’s a problem. And that is where we are today.”

Usman further asserted that Abure’s tenure as national chairman has expired, prompting the party to address the leadership vacuum in line with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) directives. She recalled an incident where INEC ordered Abure and his secretary to leave a meeting after his term ended. Despite this, Abure secured a court ruling compelling INEC to recognize him, a decision that continues to fuel the party’s division.
