 LAGOS CELEBRATES GLOBAL INTERNATIONAL DANCE DAY WITH VIBRANT SHOWCASE 


The Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture (LSCAC) has joined in  the global celebration of International Dance Day on April 29, 2025


The commemoration, which took place at the Council's temporary office in Shangisha, Lagos, further underscores Dance as a universal language that champions unity, healing, and profound cultural expression. 


This year's global theme, "Inclusion, Innovation, and Diversity in Dance," resonated deeply as LSCAC encouraged dancers, choreographers, and cultural enthusiasts across Lagos to celebrate the transformative power of movement. Celebrations spanned diverse platforms, from captivating performances in community spaces and on grand stages to engaging expressions via digital platforms.


While noting that Dance, in its myriad forms, vividly reflects the dynamism and spirit of the Nigerian people, the Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Idowu Johnson said, "From the captivating Bata of the Yoruba and the graceful Atilogwu of the Igbo to the energetic Swange of the Tiv, the Nigeria's rich dance heritage stands as a vibrant testament to the nation's enduring traditions."


"In Lagos, a renowned cultural melting pot, these dances transcend mere entertainment, serving as vital tools for preserving history, fortifying identity, and inspiring generations to come," Johnson disclosed 


Committed to promoting and sustaining Nigeria's invaluable dance culture, the Lagos State Government actively supports cultural troupes, dynamic festivals, and captivating performances. This unwavering support ensures that traditional dance remains an integral and lively component of the state's collective heritage.


A vibrant showcase of indigenous dances from the South-West region of Nigeria took centre stage to mark the occasion. The captivating performances featured the Bata from Oyo, Dundun from Osun, Obitun from Ondo, Iyengbe from Ijebu, Ponse from Ipokia (Ogun State), Sewele from Kwara, Elemure from Ekiti, Akoto from Badagry, and the iconic Eyo from Lagos Island, highlighting the rich tapestry of the region's dance traditions.


Beyond the celebratory festivities, dance remains a potent force for fostering peace, unity, and cultural pride. Let us continue to celebrate together, embracing the unifying rhythm of movement as a powerful symbol of harmony and boundless artistic expression.


It must be emphasised that the Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture is dedicated to the preservation, promotion, and development of the rich artistic and cultural heritage of Lagos State. Through various initiatives and programmes, the Council aims to engage communities, support artists, and ensure the vibrant cultural landscape of Lagos thrives for generations to come.
