Yemen fighting pushes nearly 3,000 to Djibouti in less than a week: UN    Nearly 3,000 people have fled Yemen for Djibouti in less than a week as escalating violence drives growing displacement within the country and across its borders, the UN refugee agency said Friday. “Refugees continue to arrive by boat through Obock, Khor Angar, Moulhoule and Godoria after difficult journeys in small vessels,” UNHCR representative in Djibouti Sandrine Desamours told reporters in Geneva, Anadolu Agency reported. More than half of those crossing the Bab el-Mandeb Strait are women and children, while some families have been displaced for a second time after previously fleeing Yemen during the 2015 crisis and later returning. UNHCR is preparing for at least 10,000 new arrivals but warned that capacity is rapidly diminishing.  Anambra Court orders Life Imprisonment to Security Personnel Who Rap€d 17yr-old Girl Hawking “Okpa” At Upper Iweka.


One Mr Michael Okoi, aged 23, who on 11th May 2024 at a Filling Station along Onitsha – Asaba Expressway, Upper Iweka, allegedly had unlawful s€xual int€rcourse with a 17yr-old girl hawking “Okpa” at the area, offence contrary  to Section 3(2) of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition and Protection) Laws of Anambra State, 2017, has been Sentenced to Life Imprisonment For taking advantage of the vulnerability of the “young naïve girl who was on a survival quest in this harsh economy to ravage her womanhood.


The Children, Sexual and Gender-based Violence Court sitting at Awka and presided over by Justice Peace Otti, sentenced the perpetrator, Michael, to life imprisonment on count 1, and fined him two hundred thousand naira each on counts 2 and 3


Reacting to this, the Anambra State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Professor Sylvia Ifemeje, has described this judgment as landmark the ‘life sentence judgement’ given in a case brought against a security personnel,


The Justice Commissioner noted that the judgement is one that sends a signal that the Governor Chukwuma Soludo administration has zero tolerance for all forms of gender-based violence in the state.
