 Connie Ferguson faces online backlash over absence at Presley Chweneyagae’s funeral


Actress and media mogul Connie Ferguson found herself unexpectedly trending on social media following the funeral of acclaimed actor Presley Chweneyagae on June 7, at Akasia Community Hall in Pretoria. 


Chweneyagae, known for his Oscar-winning role in Tsotsi and as Thuso “Cobra” Mokoena in The River, passed away on May 27, at age 40 due to natural causes.


Ferguson’s absence from the funeral sparked a heated debate online, with some netizens criticizing her for not attending. 


One X post claimed she was “wrong” for missing the event, alleging Chweneyagae had supported her during her late husband Shona Ferguson’s passing in 2021. 


The post, which garnered significant attention, called her absence “disgusting” and fueled a wave of negative sentiment. 


However, others swiftly came to Ferguson’s defense, citing her busy schedule, including the launch of Kings of Jo’Burg 3, which was likely planned months in advance. 


Supporters also highlighted the emotional toll funerals can take, with one X user stating, “Do you understand how triggering funerals are? Give people a break.” 


Another urged netizens to stop the “hate and negativity,” arguing that personal choices about attending events do not equate to malice.


The polarized reactions underscore Ferguson’s prominence in South Africa’s entertainment industry and the intense scrutiny public figures face. While some pressed netizens did the most to drag the beloved actress, her defenders emphasized empathy and understanding, calling for an end to speculative criticism over her absence at Chweneyagae’s burial ceremony.
