 Russian forces to stay in Mali to fight terrorism: Kremlin The Kremlin said on Thursday that Russian forces would stay in Mali to help the country's government battle terrorists following an offensive over the weekend by Tuareg-led separatists and terrorists. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the statement after being asked by a reporter how Russia responded to a purported statement from the terrorists saying they wanted Russia to leave Mali. "Russia's presence there is, in fact, due to the need identified by the current government. Russia will continue, including in Mali, to combat extremism, terrorism and other harmful phenomena and will continue to provide assistance to the current government," said Peskov, AFP reported. The Russian Defence Ministry had claimed on Tuesday that units of its African Corps prevented an attempted coup on April 25, 2026 in Mali.  Security Guard Arrested in Connection with N1 Shooting Incident Near Makhado


On 20 June 2025, at approximately 23:00, a 42-year-old male suspect, believed to be a security guard employed by a local security company, was arrested in Makhado in connection with a shooting incident that left a 28-year-old woman injured.


According to preliminary reports, the victim was travelling with family in a silver Toyota C-HR from Gauteng. As they approached the three-mile circle on the N1, their vehicle was allegedly stopped by an unknown vehicle. Sensing potential danger, the driver did not comply and instead executed a U-turn. The family continued driving before making another U-turn, heading back towards Makhado.


It was at this point, near the same location on the N1, that gunshots were reportedly fired at their vehicle, resulting in the woman sustaining injuries.


The suspect, identified as a 42-year-old security officer, was arrested at the scene. A Siga 7.62 rifle, believed to have been used in the shooting, was confiscated during the arrest.


The suspect is expected to appear before the Makhado Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 23 June 2025.
