Thembi Kgatlana sidelined as Desiree Ellis names Banyana Banyana squad for WAFCON

Banyana Banyana will head to the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco without star striker Thembi Kgatlana, who has been ruled out for personal reasons, as confirmed by the South African Football Association (SAFA).

Coach Desiree Ellis finalized a 28-player squad from a preliminary list of 46, gearing up for the tournament set for July 5 to 26, 2025.

The defending champions face a challenging Group B, including Ghana, Mali, and Tanzania. Despite Kgatlana’s absence, the squad boasts several big names. Refiloe Jane, a midfield stalwart, returns to provide leadership and stability. Overseas-based stars Jermaine Seoposenwe (C.F. Monterrey), Hildah Magaia, and Linda Motlhalo (DjurgÃ¥rdens) headline the attack, while defenders Lebogang Ramalepe and Bongeka Gamede bolster the backline.

Young goalkeeper Casey Gordon also earns a notable call-up after impressing in camp. Hildah Magaia, who will join the camp late due to a medical assessment, adds further firepower to a squad aiming to retain their 2022 title.

With a mix of experience and emerging talent, Ellis is confident in her team’s ability to shine in Morocco.
