Anambra Govt Debunks False Claims of Insecurity in Umuchu

By Chizoba Njaka

The Anambra State Government has been alerted to the dissemination of fabricated audio and video content on social media, purporting to depict incidents of insecurity within the state. A recent instance is a video featuring a voice note that falsely claims Fulani Herdsmen attacked a community in Umuchu, resulting in multiple fatalities.

The Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor in  a press statement in Awka has clarified that investigations have revealed the claim to be entirely baseless. It has been confirmed that no incident of the nature described occurred in Umuchu or any other part of Anambra State, and there was no involvement of Fulani herdsmen in such an incident. The video in question actually pertains to an event that took place in a different state.

According to Dr. Mefor, the spread of false information is tantamount to a calculated propaganda effort, driven by individuals with obscure intentions seeking to foment insecurity in Anambra State. The Commissioner also highlighted the practice of recycling outdated videos, often originating from outside the state, and presenting them as current instances of insecurity in Anambra.

He warned that the government will take a firm stance against these blatant attempts to undermine the state's peace and security, and will not hesitate to take necessary measures to address the situation.

The state government hereby notifies that it will employ sophisticated technology to identify and prosecute the originators of fake news, in strict adherence to the cybercrime laws. Perpetrators will face the full consequences of the law, including arrest and prosecution.
