Russian forces to stay in Mali to fight terrorism: Kremlin The Kremlin said on Thursday that Russian forces would stay in Mali to help the country's government battle terrorists following an offensive over the weekend by Tuareg-led separatists and terrorists. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the statement after being asked by a reporter how Russia responded to a purported statement from the terrorists saying they wanted Russia to leave Mali. "Russia's presence there is, in fact, due to the need identified by the current government. Russia will continue, including in Mali, to combat extremism, terrorism and other harmful phenomena and will continue to provide assistance to the current government," said Peskov, AFP reported.  Ebonyi Governor Suspends 25 Commissioners, 62 Aides for Missing State Function

Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has suspended 25 commissioners and 62 aides for failing to attend a state-organized function, describing their absence as an act of insubordination and neglect of duty. The announcement was made on Monday during a state executive council meeting in Abakaliki, sparking widespread reactions across the state.

According to a statement from the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Monday Uzor, the suspended officials include key members of the State Executive Council and senior aides, whose absence from the event was deemed a breach of protocol and commitment to governance. The state function, reportedly a civic reception for a prominent Ebonyi indigene recently honored at the federal level, was intended to showcase unity and solidarity within the state’s leadership.

Governor Nwifuru, in a strongly worded address, emphasized the importance of loyalty and active participation in state activities. “If you are a commissioner or aide, your presence at state functions is non-negotiable. This administration will not tolerate absenteeism or disregard for official duties,” he stated. The suspensions take effect immediately, with affected officials required to hand over all government property in their possession within 48 hours.

The statement further clarified that the suspensions will last for an initial period of one month, pending a review by a disciplinary committee set up to investigate the circumstances surrounding each official’s absence. Sources close to the government suggest that some suspended officials have cited personal emergencies or scheduling conflicts, but the governor has insisted on strict accountability.

This is not the first time Governor Nwifuru has taken decisive action against perceived lapses in his administration. In 2024, he sacked three commissioners for alleged financial misconduct, signaling a zero-tolerance stance on governance issues. Political analysts suggest this latest move may be aimed at consolidating authority and ensuring alignment within his administration as Ebonyi prepares for significant developmental projects in 2025.

The government has urged residents to remain supportive as it works to uphold transparency and efficiency. Meanwhile, the suspended officials have yet to issue public statements, and the disciplinary committee is expected to commence investigations within the week.
