Ex-Governor Ikpeazu Mourns Boxing Legend Obisia Nwakpa as Family Sets November 2025 Burial Date

The family of former boxing champion and coach Obisia Nwakpa, who passed away on June 3, 2025, after a prolonged illness, has announced that his burial will take place in November 2025 in his hometown of Okpulukwu Umuosu, Umunna Nsulu clan, Isiala Ngwa North LGA, Abia State.

Franca Nwakpa, the late boxer’s wife, told newsmen in an interview in Calabar that the family chose the November date to allow time to raise funds for renovating Nwakpa’s dilapidated country home and to ensure a befitting burial. She revealed that the family spent over N9 million on his medical treatment and welfare during his illness, depleting their resources. “Over the years of his illness, the family expended well over N9m on his medical treatment and welfare. We know that it was a deserving sacrifice we willingly made in honour of his remarkable contributions to Nigeria and the boxing world,” she said.

The family has reached out to boxing authorities and the Abia State government for support, with Franca stating, “We have written to sports authorities in the country to formally inform them about the passing of our father and former boxing coach. We will certainly need them. We strongly appeal for their support.”

Former Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, in a condolence letter to the family, described Nwakpa as a “boxing legend” whose contributions to Nigerian sports remain indelible.
