Prosecutor Arrested for Using Fake Law Degree

A 33-year-old man who worked as a public prosecutor has been arrested for allegedly faking his law qualifications to secure employment in the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

Luthando Nomandindi appeared before the Mthatha Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Tuesday, 22 July 2025, facing charges of fraud, forgery, and uttering. His arrest followed a thorough investigation by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit, in partnership with the NPA.

According to the Hawks, Nomandindi was registered at Walter Sisulu University (WSU) between 2010 and 2016 but failed to complete his LLB degree. Despite this, he allegedly submitted a fake degree certificate and forged Legal Education and Development (L.E.A.D) attendance records in 2020 to apply for the NPA’s Aspirant Prosecutor Programme.

He was appointed as an aspirant prosecutor in 2021 and later promoted to public prosecutor. Investigations revealed that he had even applied for a senior post using the same fake qualifications. When asked to provide original documents for his promotion, Nomandindi abruptly resigned in March 2025.

Further verification confirmed that WSU had never issued him a degree and that L.E.A.D had not certified his attendance due to unpaid fees. His fraudulent employment is believed to have cost the state more than R1.1 million in salaries.

Nomandindi was released on R5,000 bail. His case has been postponed to 18 August 2025 for further investigation.
