In a significant shake-up within the Nigerian Senate, Senate President Godswill Akpabio has removed Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP, Kogi Central) as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and NGOs. The decision, announced on Thursday, July 10, 2025, marks the second time this year that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has been stripped of a committee leadership role.
Earlier in February 2025, Akpoti-Uduaghan was removed as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Local Content and reassigned to lead the Diaspora and NGOs Committee. With this latest development, she will no longer head any Senate committee. Senator Aniekan Bassey (Akwa Ibom North East) has been appointed to replace her as Chairman of the Diaspora and NGOs Committee.
The removal has sparked speculation about internal dynamics within the Senate, with sources indicating potential political or administrative reasons behind the decision. Neither Senator Akpabio nor Akpoti-Uduaghan has issued a public statement regarding the specific reasons for the change.
This development comes amid ongoing efforts to reorganize Senate committees to enhance legislative efficiency. The Senate leadership has yet to confirm whether further changes to committee assignments are forthcoming.
