Lagos police launch investigation as jeweller  accuses its officers of harassment The Lagos State Police Command said it has commenced an investigation into a viral video of a jeweller accusing some policemen in the Festac area of the state of harassing him.  The command disclosed this in an X post on Saturday. The video, which circulated on X on Saturday morning, shows the businessman engaged in a struggle with some policemen. Later in the video, the businessman could be seen with a bloody face after allegedly sustaining a cut beside his right eye during the struggle with the police officers,  The jeweller later explained that the policemen from the Festac Division had stopped him for a routine search. Starmer says UK will recognize Palestinian state if Israel does not agree to ceasefire


Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced Tuesday that the U.K. plans to recognize a Palestinian state in September unless Israel agrees to a ceasefire in Gaza and takes meaningful steps toward a lasting peace. Starmer convened a rare summer Cabinet meeting to address the escalating crisis in Gaza and outline the government’s stance.

He told ministers that Britain will move forward with recognizing Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly if the Israeli government does not take significant action to end the humanitarian crisis, agree to a ceasefire, renounce any plans to annex parts of the West Bank, and commit to a peace process aimed at achieving a two-state solution. While the U.K. has historically supported a negotiated two-state solution, calls to formally recognize Palestinian statehood have intensified following French President Emmanuel Macron’s announcement that France will recognize Palestine in September, making it the first major Western nation to do so.
