Abia State Government Refutes Cancellation of Teacher Recruitment, Addresses School Census Non-Compliance

The Abia State government, through the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, has dismissed reports claiming that the recruitment of new teachers in the state has been cancelled. In a statement issued on Friday by Permanent Secretary Uchechukwu Kalu, on behalf of Commissioner Goodluck Ubochi, the ministry urged residents to disregard the false information circulating about the employment process.

The state government also expressed concern over the refusal of some private school proprietors to participate in the ongoing 2025 annual school census exercise. To address this, the government has established three zonal census centres to ensure all schools are captured in the census, scheduled to run from August 25 to September 11, 2025.

According to the statement, Abayi Girls Secondary School, Aba, will serve as the census centre for Abia South, while Ibeku High School, Umuahia, and Ebem Primary School will be used for the Umuahia and Ohafia zones, respectively. The government reiterated its commitment to ensuring an accurate and comprehensive school census to enhance educational planning in the state.
