Anambra Assembly Summons Lawmaker Over Allegations of Constituency Fund Misuse

The Anambra State House of Assembly has summoned Hon. Bernard Udemezue, the member representing Ayamelum Constituency, for allegedly exposing the diversion of constituency funds by fellow lawmakers. The decision was made during a plenary session in Awka on Thursday, following a motion of urgent public importance moved by Hon. Tony Muobike, representing Aguata 2.

Muobike condemned Udemezue’s recent social media posts, describing them as damaging to the House’s reputation and a potential threat to the safety of its members. Udemezue, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA)-dominated Assembly, had publicly disclosed details of constituency allowances, accusing some colleagues of misappropriating funds intended for community projects.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, referred the matter to the House Committee on Rules, Business, Ethics, and Privileges for further investigation. The committee is expected to submit its findings at the next plenary session on Tuesday, August 26, 2025.

Udemezue’s allegations have sparked widespread debate, with some residents praising his courage in exposing alleged financial misconduct, while others view his actions as a breach of legislative decorum. The summons has heightened tensions within the Assembly, raising questions about transparency and accountability in the management of constituency funds.

The Anambra State House of Assembly has yet to issue an official statement on the specific allegations raised by Udemezue, and the public awaits the outcome of the committee’s investigation. The controversy underscores ongoing concerns about the effective use of public funds allocated for constituency development in Anambra State.
