Russian forces to stay in Mali to fight terrorism: Kremlin The Kremlin said on Thursday that Russian forces would stay in Mali to help the country's government battle terrorists following an offensive over the weekend by Tuareg-led separatists and terrorists. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the statement after being asked by a reporter how Russia responded to a purported statement from the terrorists saying they wanted Russia to leave Mali. "Russia's presence there is, in fact, due to the need identified by the current government. Russia will continue, including in Mali, to combat extremism, terrorism and other harmful phenomena and will continue to provide assistance to the current government," said Peskov, AFP reported.  BENUE ASSEMBLY REJECTS IMPEACHMENT PLOT, BACKS SPEAKER DAJOH WITH VOTE OF CONFIDENCE

20th August, 2025

The Benue State House of Assembly has firmly thrown its weight behind Speaker Rt. Hon. Hyacinth Aondona Dajoh, passing a vote of confidence in his leadership amid reports of external efforts to unseat him.

The resolution came during a plenary session presided over by Speaker Dajoh himself, as lawmakers also extended their vote of confidence to the Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia.

Moving the motion, Hon. Douglas Akya, who represents Makurdi South State Constituency, praised Governor Alia for his adherence to the rule of law and swift action in response to resolutions from the Assembly. Akya noted the Governor's "uncommon commitment" to addressing the welfare concerns of the people of Benue.

Members of the Assembly condemned what they described as "ongoing attempts by non-state actors" to interfere in the Assembly’s affairs and push for an unjustified impeachment.

“These efforts are aimed at destabilizing the peace and progress of this Assembly and our dear State,” the House stated in a resolution.

Lawmakers rallied around Dajoh, commending his leadership and affirming their “unwavering support” for his continued stewardship of the 10th Assembly. The statement warned against any further attempts to meddle in the internal workings of the legislature.
