Hilary Duff is set to star in a new comedy series about beauty pageants, titled “Pretty Ugly,” currently in development at Hulu.
The series comes from Kirker Butler, known for his work on “Only Murders in the Building,” who is writing and executive producing. Duff will also serve as an executive producer alongside Silver Tree, who is attached to direct, and Aaron Kaplan of Kapital Entertainment.
In the series, Duff will play Miranda Miller, a former teenage pageant queen determined to make her ten-year-old daughter, Bailey, the most successful child pageant contestant in the country. Bailey, however, is burned out from competitions she’s been entering since infancy and wants nothing to do with her mother’s ambitions.
The story follows Miranda’s relentless pursuit of a beauty pageant empire, which also involves her unborn daughter. Complications arise as her husband, Ray—a nurse with a penchant for taking random pills—has impregnated the 18-year-old granddaughter of one of his hospice patients, while Miranda’s widowed mother, Joan, is plotting a murder with Jesus.
Butler, who wrote the satirical novel on which the series is based, has a long resume including work on “Family Guy,” “The Cleveland Show,” “The Neighbors,” and “What I Like About You.”
“Pretty Ugly” marks a continued collaboration between Duff and Hulu, following her lead role in the two-season spinoff series “How I Met Your Father.”
