APC Chieftain in Anambra State Tony Ezekwelu has accused the Anambra State government of importing over 700 armed men from other states to intimidate voters during the recent by-elections in Anambra.
Speaking in an interview with TVC, Ezekwelu described what he characterized as a militarized election environment while monitoring the polls in Nnewi South and Nnewi North. Ezekwelu stated that;
"I was there because my team was monitoring the election in Nnewi South and part of Nnewi North. And then, you see, the time I went to the collation center in Osumenyi in Nnewi South—oh my God, I thought that Nigeria has gone into a real war with another country,"
The APC chieftain detailed the heavy weaponry he claims to have witnessed at the collation center.
"I saw more than 700 Udo-ga-achi armed with AK-47s, with pump-action guns. They surrounded the whole local government headquarters where the office was situated. They were having charms and so many things. And funny thing—majority of them are not from Anambra State. They were imported from Rivers, Delta, Bayelsa, from Cross River, and other places in order to execute the election,"
The APC official described feeling trapped by the armed presence at the election venue. He lamented that they were literally held hostage by these people but the Deputy Governor, with the LGA Chairman of Nnewi South and the Commissioner for Environment, Honorable Felix, and others, they were parading around with these men as if we are in a war situation.
