Labour Party Caretaker Chairperson Accuses Factional Leader of Forgery in FCT Election Dispute

The Caretaker Chairperson of the Labour Party (LP), Nenadi Usman, has accused factional chairman Julius Abure of engaging in forgery and manipulating judicial processes to secure a court order for the upcoming Federal Capital Territory (FCT) council elections. In a statement issued by her Senior Special Adviser on Media, Ken Asogwa, in Abuja on Friday, Usman described the alleged court order obtained by Abure’s faction as an act of desperation.

The order, reportedly issued by a Nasarawa State High Court, purportedly directs the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to upload the names of candidates backed by Abure’s faction for the FCT council polls scheduled for February 2026. Usman criticized the timing of the order’s public release, calling it “suspicious” and “mischievous” as it coincides with nationwide bye-elections.

Usman referenced Abure’s alleged history of forgery, citing his involvement in the 2023 Ebonyi State governorship election, for which she claims the Attorney-General of the Federation has directed police prosecution. “Given Abure’s notorious record in matters of forgery, this development, if true, would come as no surprise,” the statement read.

She further argued that the Nasarawa State High Court lacks jurisdiction over INEC, a federal institution, and accused Abure of “forum shopping” by bypassing the Federal High Court, which holds exclusive constitutional authority in such matters. Usman called the move a “blatant abuse of judicial process” that warrants judicial reprimand.

The statement also highlighted a Supreme Court ruling on April 4, 2025, which Usman claims removed Abure from office. She accused Abure and his supporters of being emboldened by the APC-led Federal Government to undermine the Labour Party and Nigeria’s democratic institutions. “Their unholy alliance serves one purpose alone: to erode our democratic institutions and diminish the authority of the Supreme Court,” Usman stated.

The Labour Party leadership urged Nigerians to remain vigilant, alleging that Abure’s actions are an attempt to destabilize the party and the nation’s democracy.
