Pastor Kumuyi Addresses Succession Agitations in Deeper Life Bible Church

Pastor William Kumuyi, General Superintendent of Deeper Life Bible Church, has firmly addressed growing concerns and “subtle agitations” within the church regarding his successor, emphasizing that the decision lies solely with God and not with church members. Speaking at a recent church event in Lagos, Kumuyi expressed displeasure over what he described as attempts to pressure him into stepping aside or influencing the succession process.

“No one can control me or force my hand on this matter,” Kumuyi declared, addressing speculations about his retirement and the future leadership of the church. “God, not members, will choose the next leader of Deeper Life. My focus remains on fulfilling the divine mandate for this ministry.”

The remarks come amid murmurs within the church’s ranks about who will succeed the 84-year-old cleric, who has led Deeper Life Bible Church for over five decades. Known for its strict adherence to holiness doctrines and widespread influence across Nigeria and beyond, the church has seen growing discussions about leadership transition as Kumuyi advances in age.

Sources within the church, speaking anonymously, noted that while Kumuyi remains in good health and active in ministry, some members have begun advocating for clarity on succession plans to ensure continuity. However, Kumuyi’s statement underscores his belief that divine guidance, rather than human lobbying, will determine the next leader.

Church analysts suggest this development reflects a broader trend in Nigeria’s mega-churches, where succession debates often spark tension due to the significant influence and resources tied to leadership roles. Kumuyi urged members to focus on spiritual growth and unity, warning against divisive campaigns that could undermine the church’s mission.

The Deeper Life Bible Church, headquartered in Lagos, has millions of members globally and operates numerous schools, charitable initiatives, and media outlets. Neither Kumuyi nor the church’s leadership has provided a timeline for any transition, leaving the issue open to speculation.
