Rapper Sean Kingston sentenced to three and a half years in prison for $1 million fraud scheme

Rapper Sean Kingston was sentenced Friday to three and a half years in prison for his role in a $1 million fraud scheme in which he used his celebrity status to trick sellers into providing luxury items he never paid for.

Kingston, born Kisean Paul Anderson, and his mother, Janice Eleanor Turner, were convicted in March by a federal jury on charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and four counts of wire fraud. Turner was sentenced last month to five years in prison.

Before U.S. District Judge David Leibowitz handed down the sentence, Kingston apologized in court, saying he had learned from his actions. His attorney requested that he be allowed to self-surrender later due to health concerns, but the judge ordered him taken into custody immediately. Kingston, 35, removed his suit jacket, was handcuffed, and led from the courtroom.

Kingston and his mother were arrested in May 2024 after a SWAT raid on his rented Fort Lauderdale mansion. Turner was taken into custody at the home, while Kingston was apprehended at Fort Irwin, an Army training base in California, where he was performing.

Court documents show that between April 2023 and March 2024, Kingston arranged purchases of high-end merchandise via social media. Sellers were invited to his Florida homes with promises that their products would be featured on his platforms. Investigators said Kingston or Turner then sent fake wire transfer receipts to victims for items including a bulletproof Escalade, luxury watches, and a 19-foot LED TV. Payments were either never made or only provided after lawsuits or law enforcement intervention.

Kingston, who was born in Florida and raised in Jamaica, first gained fame at age 17 with the 2007 hit “Beautiful Girls,” which sampled Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me.” His other notable songs include “Take You There” (2007) and “Fire Burning” (2009).
