SCIENTIST SENDS EGUSI SEEDS TO SPACE

For the first time in history, egusi or melon seeds have been sent to space for scientific experiments. This was done by the founder and Managing Director of Space in Africa, Dr. Temidayo Oniosun.

The egusi seeds were sent to the ISS aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket for NASA’s Crew-11 mission on Thursday. The objective was to determine the viability of egusi seeds for cultivation in the Earth's atmosphere.

Oniosun said he chose to send egusi seeds and no other seeds because of its central importance to Nigerians and Africans.

"I think that Egusi is the most cultural dish in Nigeria," he said. "You know, everybody eats Egusi. The Yorubas lay claim to Egusi that it originated from them. Even the Igbos also, they do the same. If you go across West Africa, you know, people are eating Egusi.”
