Warner Bros. is developing a film focused on NBA legend Kobe Bryant and his path to the Los Angeles Lakers.
The project, titled With the 8th Pick, was written by Alex Sohn and Gavin Johannsen and explores the 1996 NBA draft, when Bryant emerged from high school as a top prospect. The story highlights the New Jersey Nets and then-general manager John Nash, who held the eighth pick and debated selecting Bryant. Ultimately, Bryant was chosen 13th by the Charlotte Hornets before being traded to the Lakers, where he would win five championships and become an enduring icon in Los Angeles.
The film is described as blending the strategic drama of Moneyball, the tech-world tension of The Social Network, and the sports-business focus of Air. Producers include Tim and Trevor White of Star Thrower Entertainment, Ryan Stowell, and Gotham Chopra of Religion of Sports. No director has yet been announced.
Bryant, who passed away in a 2020 helicopter crash alongside his 13-year-old daughter Gianna, was part of Lakers teams that featured Shaquille O’Neal and Phil Jackson. Sohn is also working on a Netflix project about John Madden, while Johannsen continues his screenwriting career with representation from Verve and Gotham.
