Charlie Kirk’s body will be flown on Air Force Two, the vice president’s plane, from Utah to Arizona, where he lived with his family, officials said.
Vice President JD Vance traveled to Salt Lake City on Thursday to retrieve Kirk’s body, a day after the 31-year-old conservative activist was shot and killed during an event at Utah Valley University. The aircraft will transport Kirk to Phoenix, where Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance will accompany his family and friends. Kirk is survived by his wife, Erika, and their two young children.
“We will continue to facilitate movements to get him home today and with his family,” said Beau Mason, commissioner of the Utah Department of Public Safety, during a press conference Thursday morning. Kirk’s body had been transferred from the hospital to a medical examiner’s office on Wednesday night.
Kirk, co-founder of Turning Point USA, was killed while speaking at an outdoor “Prove Me Wrong” debate. A suspect has not yet been identified. Vance, who described himself as a friend of Kirk, highlighted the activist’s efforts to support President Trump and his role in organizing pro-Trump events. “So much of the success we've had in this administration traces directly to Charlie's ability to organize and convene,” Vance wrote, noting that Kirk helped with both the 2024 campaign and key government staffing decisions.
