GENETICS BREAKTHROUGH: JAPANESE SCIENTISTS REMOVE EXTRA CHROMOSOME 21 LINKED TO DOWN SYNDROME. (PHOTO)

Genetics Breakthrough: Japanese Scientists Remove Extra Chromosome 21 Linked to Down Syndrome.

In a groundbreaking achievement, Japanese scientists have successfully removed the extra chromosome 21 – the genetic cause of Down syndrome – from cultured human cells. Using CRISPR technology, the team removed the third copy of chromosome 21 from a subgroup of cells with trisomy 21, marking a major step towards potential new therapies.

However, while the work is hopeful, it has not yet been tested in humans and cannot yet be considered a clinical cure. The breakthrough also raises important ethical questions: Should we place limits on genetic engineering? What does this mean for human diversity? Experts warn that careful oversight and extensive public discussion are needed as we consider the future of genetic advances.
