SpaceX sends cargo freighter to International Space Station

SpaceX successfully launched a cargo freighter to the International Space Station (ISS) Sunday evening from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

The Northrop Grumman NG-23 Cygnus XL lifted off at 6:11 p.m. EDT atop a Falcon 9 rocket, carrying 11,000 pounds of supplies and experimental equipment. NASA said the shipment includes materials for growing semiconductor crystals in microgravity, equipment to improve cryogenic fuel tanks, a specialized UV light system to prevent microbial growth in water systems, and supplies to produce pharmaceutical crystals aimed at cancer and other disease treatments. Routine provisions for the ISS crew, including food, were also on board.

The Cygnus is expected to dock with the ISS on Wednesday and remain attached until March 2026. Afterward, it will detach, carrying refuse from the station, and burn up during reentry into Earth’s atmosphere. It joins the Russian Progress freighter, which arrived at the ISS on Saturday.

Eight minutes after launch, the Falcon 9’s first-stage booster landed safely back at Cape Canaveral, producing a sonic boom that shook Brevard County. NASA named this mission S.S. William “Willie” McCool to honor the astronaut who perished in the 2003 Columbia shuttle disaster.
