AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. South Sudanese authorities estimate the number of displaced in Jonglei at more than 180,000, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said last week.  2027: Southern Kaduna Group Endorses Ex-Defence Chief Musa For Senate

As preparations intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, a coalition in Southern Kaduna has called on former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd), to contest for the Senate seat representing the Southern Kaduna Senatorial Zone.

The movement, known as the Christopher Gwabin Musa (CGM) Vanguard 2027, comprises men, women, and youths from across the region who believe the retired general embodies leadership rooted in integrity, compassion, and vision.

In a statement issued by its national coordinator, Hon. Baba Ransome Adamu, the group described Musa as “a man of peace, unity, and purpose.” Adamu praised Musa’s tenure as Defence Chief, noting that his leadership brought “relative peace, enhanced professionalism, and renewed trust in Nigeria’s security institutions.”

He further described the ex-military chief as “a humble and fair leader who remains approachable despite his rank and achievements.”

“For many in Southern Kaduna, his name symbolizes hope and reconciliation in a region long in need of unity and progress,” Adamu said. “As 2027 draws near, we need a leader who can unite, not divide; one who can speak with wisdom and conviction. General Musa represents these values.”

According to the group, the call for Musa’s senatorial bid transcends politics, reflecting a continuation of his life of service to the nation. “He has already given Nigeria peace; now, we believe he can give his people representation,” Adamu added.

The CGM Vanguard 2027 has begun grassroots mobilization across the zone, emphasizing peace, unity, and integrity-driven leadership under the slogan: “From Peacekeeping to Nation Building — CGM 2027.”
