Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has warned residents against recruiting criminals from outside the state to carry out kidnappings and other violent crimes, describing the trend as a major setback to ongoing efforts to improve security. The governor issued the warning on Wednesday while speaking at the 2026 Ministers’ Conference organised by the Edo State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Benin City. Okpebholo expressed concern over the security situation in the state, alleging that some individuals were deliberately exaggerating incidents of crime and spreading false information on social media to discredit his administration.  California deputy dies in line of duty before high-speed chase and crash

A San Bernardino County deputy was shot and killed Monday while responding to a domestic violence call in Rancho Cucamonga, California.

Deputy Andrew Nunez, 6 years into his career with the Sheriff’s Department, was struck in the head by a suspect who allegedly opened fire as deputies arrived at the 12300 block of Hollyhock Drive around 12:40 p.m. Paramedics airlifted Nunez to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton, where he was pronounced dead. He leaves behind a wife, a 2-year-old daughter, and was expecting a second child.

Following the shooting, the suspect fled on a motorcycle, leading authorities on a high-speed chase along the 210 Freeway. Speeds reportedly exceeded 120 mph, with the suspect weaving on and off the freeway and narrowly avoiding collisions. The pursuit ended near Claremont when a black sedan, driven by an off-duty deputy who intervened, struck the motorcycle, sending the suspect airborne. Emergency responders transported him by helicopter to a nearby hospital, where he is in stable condition.

Sheriff Shannon Dicus described the department’s grief and the dangers deputies face, noting this was the 81st shooting involving his staff since 2022. “There’s a tremendous amount of violence out there,” Dicus said, emphasizing the department’s commitment to pursuing justice for Nunez’s family.

Authorities have not yet identified the suspect. The San Bernardino County District Attorney’s office said murder charges are expected, and investigators are continuing to gather details. A law enforcement procession was held Monday evening to honor Deputy Nunez as his body was taken to a local funeral home.
