 AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. South Sudanese authorities estimate the number of displaced in Jonglei at more than 180,000, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said last week. The House of Representatives today, Tuesday 21st 2025, urged its relevant committees to investigate the alleged communal clashes between people of Iguelgba, Oben, Ikobi, and Obazogbe N’ugu of Edo State and that of Mosogar in Delta State.


According to Billy Osawaru, the member representing Orhionmwon/Uhunmwude Federal Constituency, Edo state, the recent cla$h is allegedly caused by the people of Mosogar Delta state who led unjustified incursi0n and attack by thugs and hoodlums to the Edo communities.


He said that the people have lived in peace within the oil exploration area of Orhionmwon LGA, Edo State with0ut f€ar, harassm€nt and crisis of any kind and have shared common boundaries with Delta State, particularly at the Mosogar axis of the state.


He further added that “if serious action is not taken to stop this, it may snowball into a full-scale interstate crisis, which will in turn threaten the peace and stability of the nation in general".
