An official from the Tuareg-led separatist group claimed soldiers and mercenaries at the camp had "surrendered", following a fierce fight over the weekend. Simultaneous attacks in Mali by militants linked to Al Qaeda and separatist Tuareg rebels on April 25 showed how fighters from different groups with different goals were able to strike at the heart of the West African country's military government. Gunfire and explosions were reported in the capital Bamako and around a large military base outside the capital, as well as Gao and central areas, as gunfire continuing in the northern city of Kidal. EX-SENATOR ELISHA ABBO DENIES BEING IN POLICE CUSTODY OVER ALLEGED RAPE OF 13-YEAR-OLD.(PHOTO).

Former senator representing Adamawa North, Elisha Abbo, has denied reports circulating on social media claiming he was arrested and detained by police over the alleged rape of a 13-year-old secondary school student.

Speculations surfaced online on Wednesday alleging that the ex-lawmaker was in police custody following accusations that he sexually assaulted a minor at his Katampe residence in Abuja on June 29, 2025.

The victim’s family also claimed that senator Abbo repeatedly tried to silence them by sending money to the girl’s father, and further alleged that Senator Aishatu Binani, the 2023 Adamawa governorship candidate, visited them to dissuade them from pursuing the case.

But in a swift reaction senator Abbo dismissed the reports as fake news, insisting he is at home and not in police custody.

Speaking on phone with our correspondent Abbo described the allegations as a smear campaign orchestrated by political enemies

Giving his version of events, the former senator claimed a woman had demanded N5 million from him, threatening to report him to the police if he failed to pay.

He added that he personally reported the matter to the Nigeria Police Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), where both parties were later invited for questioning.

The latest controversy adds to a string of scandals that have trailed Abbo’s political career.

In 2019, he made national headlines after a viral video showed him assaulting a woman at a sex toy shop in Abuja.

He was also previously accused of attempting to blackmail a married woman with an alleged sex tape.

Abbo served in the 9th Senate and was initially re-elected into the 10th Senate before the Court of Appeal overturned his victory and declared Senator Amos Yohanna the rightful winner of the Adamawa North senatorial seat, just six months into the new legislative term.
