Inter Miami defender Jordi Alba to hang up boots after 2025 season
Inter Miami defender Jordi Alba will retire at the end of the 2025 MLS season, he announced Tuesday on Instagram.
The 36-year-old Spanish fullback, who had signed a contract extension in May that would have kept him with Inter Miami through 2027, said it was time to close a “truly meaningful chapter” in his career. “I do so with complete conviction, peace, and happiness. Because I feel I’ve walked this path with every ounce of passion I had and now it’s the right time to open a new chapter,” Alba wrote.
Alba began his senior career in 2006 at Cornella before moving on to Valencia and then Barcelona, where he joined the youth academy in 1998. He signed with Inter Miami in July 2023 alongside former Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets. Over 63 MLS regular-season matches, Alba recorded 10 goals and 27 assists, helping the team win the inaugural 2024 Leagues Cup and the 2024 Supporters’ Shield, when the club set a league record for single-season points.
For Spain, Alba scored 10 goals in 93 appearances, competing in three World Cups and winning the UEFA European Championship and UEFA Nations League. “Thank you to all my colleagues, staff, and everyone with whom I shared so many beautiful and unforgettable moments,” he wrote. “The best thing I take away is you all. Thanks to the fans around the world for their love and respect.”
Alba’s announcement comes a month after Busquets said he, too, would retire following the 2025 season. Inter Miami (17-7-8), already qualified for the MLS playoffs, sits third in the standings, three points behind FC Cincinnati and seven behind the Philadelphia Union. The team will host Atlanta United on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. EDT in Fort Lauderdale and close the regular season Oct. 18 at Nashville SC.
