Limp Bizkit bassist Sam Rivers dies at 48

Sam Rivers, the bassist for rock-rap band Limp Bizkit, has died at the age of 48, the group announced on their official Instagram account Saturday evening. The band described Rivers as their “heartbeat” and praised him as “pure magic,” calling him the pulse behind every song, a calm presence amid chaos, and the soul of their sound. They added that he was a once-in-a-lifetime person and a “legend among legends,” ending their tribute with: “Rest easy, brother. Your music never ends.” The cause of death was not disclosed.

Rivers grew up playing music with Limp Bizkit drummer John Otto and met frontman Fred Durst while working at a Chick-fil-A in the early 1990s. Rivers, Otto, and Durst formed the original iteration of Limp Bizkit, later joined by guitarist Wes Borland and DJ Lethal in 1996. Over the next three decades, the band released six studio albums, including Significant Other and Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water, and performed worldwide. Rivers temporarily left the group in 2015 after developing liver disease from excessive drinking, received a liver transplant, and returned in 2018. Some of Limp Bizkit’s most popular songs include “Rollin’ (Air Raid Vehicle),” “Take A Look Around,” “My Way,” “Behind Blue Eyes,” “Nookie,” “Hot Dog,” and “Break Stuff,” the latter having nearly 1 billion streams on Spotify.
