More than 100,000 children have been displaced by the latest escalation in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, UNICEF said on Sunday, warning the numbers are expected to rise as violence spreads. Since Dec. 1, intense fighting has uprooted more than 500,000 people, with children accounting for over 100,000 of those displaced in South Kivu alone, the UN agency said in a statement released Sunday. It said since Dec. 2, hundreds have been killed in the fighting, and children have been among the victims, with four students killed, six injured, and at least seven schools attacked or damaged.  'Neo-Colonialism' Uses Finance to Bind Africa to Former Masters: Russia's Permanent UN Envoy

While classic colonialism has ended, African and other developing nations remain bound to former powers through "new forms of colonialism," Vassily Nebenzia told Sputnik Africa.

"They extract immense resources from African countries. In fact, the conflicts in Africa often follow mineral resources. There are vested interests to control these areas. We speak about that openly," the Russian diplomat said.

In December 2024, the Group of Friends in Defence of the UN Charter, spearheaded by Russia, successfully saw a draft resolution for an "International Day against Colonialism in All Its Forms and Manifestations" pass through the General Assembly's Fourth Committee.

The resolution aims to designate December 14 as an annual day to strengthen anti-colonial discourse within the UN agenda.

Speaking to Sputnik Africa, Nebenzia presented Russia's UN initiative on colonialism as a tool to help African countries "liberate [themselves] from the new forms of exploitation."
