New INEC Chairman, Prof., Amupitan, Tasks Staff on Unity, Transparency, and Electoral Confidence
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday entered a new chapter of leadership as Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, formally assumed duty as the substantive Chairman of the Commission at a handover ceremony held at INEC headquarters, Abuja.
The event, marked by solemn reflection and renewed commitment to Nigeria’s democratic process, brought together the Commission’s core management team, senior directors, and dignitaries from the University of Jos — the new Chairman’s alma mater.
In her address, Acting Chairman Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu described the moment as “a significant milestone in the life of the Commission and in the evolution of Nigeria’s democracy.” She emphasized that Professor Amupitan’s appointment came at a critical juncture, as INEC intensifies preparations for the Anambra State Governorship Election scheduled for November 8, 2025
“You are assuming office at a most crucial time,” she said, noting that four National Commissioners were already in Anambra for a readiness assessment. “The task ahead is enormous. Elections are the lifeblood of democracy, and the expectations of Nigerians have never been higher.”
Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu assured the new Chairman of the professionalism and loyalty of INEC’s staff, describing them as “some of the finest, most experienced, and patriotic public servants in Nigeria.” She added that the foundation laid by successive leaderships had positioned the Commission on “firm and fertile ground” for continued institutional growth.
The ceremony also featured the introduction of INEC’s 23 departmental directors, whom she referred to as the “generals on the field of electioneering.” They represent the engine rooms of the Commission’s vast operations — from electoral logistics to voter education and legal compliance.
A high-powered delegation from the University of Jos, led by the Vice-Chancellor, accompanied by the Registrar, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Bursar, and Librarian, attended the ceremony to honour one of their distinguished alumni. Professor Amupitan’s wife, Professor Yemisi Amupitan**, and their children were also present in support.
In his inaugural address, Professor Amupitan expressed profound gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the confidence reposed in him and acknowledged the heavy responsibility that comes with leading Nigeria’s electoral body at such a sensitive period.
He pledged to uphold “the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and discipline,” stressing that his immediate focus would be on delivering a credible, free, and fair election in Anambra State.
“The eyes of the nation are upon us,” he said. “This election is a defining opportunity to demonstrate INEC’s commitment to electoral credibility and to rebuild voter confidence.”
The new INEC Chairman emphasized teamwork and internal cohesion as central to his vision. “Let us break down silos,” he urged. “Let us foster open communication and create an environment where every voice is heard and valued.”
Significantly, Professor Amupitan made a clear commitment to staff welfare, pledging to prioritize the needs of INEC employees as part of his broader reform agenda. “It’s a priority because we are going to expect so much from you,” he said. “We must be honest enough to also meet your expectations. I promise to be just and fair.”
He closed on a hopeful note, calling on staff and stakeholders to rally behind the Commission’s mandate. “Together, let us strengthen the legitimacy of our elections and fortify the foundations of Nigeria’s democracy. This is not just a job — it is a national service.”.
