Forward Lionel Messi has signed a 2.5-year contract extension with Inter Miami, keeping him at the club through the 2028 MLS season. The deal, announced Thursday at Miami Freedom Park, is for an undisclosed amount.
Messi, 38, who serves as Inter Miami’s captain, is an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner and former World Cup champion. “It makes me really happy to stay here and to continue with this project that, besides being a dream, has become a beautiful reality,” Messi said. He added that he has been very happy since arriving in Miami and is excited to continue with the team. Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham called Messi the “best player” to ever compete in soccer, praising his commitment and influence on the next generation of players.
Since joining Inter Miami in 2023, Messi has helped the club win the 2023 Leagues Cup and the 2024 MLS Supporters’ Shield. He was named League Cup best player and top scorer in 2023, followed by the 2024 MLS Landon Donovan MVP Award, and led the league in 2025 with 29 goals, earning the MLS Golden Boot. The under-construction Miami Freedom Park, where Messi will play, is scheduled to open in 2026. Messi, originally from Rosario, Argentina, has won a total of 46 trophies in his professional career, which began with FC Barcelona in 2004.
