AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. South Sudanese authorities estimate the number of displaced in Jonglei at more than 180,000, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said last week. A 5-YEAR-OLD BOY WHO WAS STAYING WITH FAMILY IN INDIANAPOLIS HAS DIED FROM A SELF-INFLICTED GUNSHOT WOUND.(PHOTO)

A 5-year-old boy who was staying with family in Indianapolis has died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Indianapolis Metro Police were called to a home on the Stone Ridge Apartments at approximately 4:10 p.m. on Thanksgiving day.

Officers were responding to the report of a person shot. However, responding officers would be shocked and heartbroken when they discovered the victim.

Officers discovered 5-year-old Andreas Woodland suffering from what appeared to be an accidental self-inflicted gunshot.

The child's devastated family stood by as the child was rushed to a nearby hospital.  Sadly, Andreas was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Andreas's parents were not present at the time of the accident. Andreas was under the care of a relative. However, the exact relationship is not clear.

Police conducted interviews with several adults present at the time of the shooting. Police say the family has fully cooperated with the investigation.

Indianapolis PD officer, Tommy Thompson, hopes that this tragedy serves as a reminder for gun owners to store them safely out of the reach of children.  He is quoted saying, "You can't take a bullet back once it's left the gun and, in this instance, a child got a hold of a firearm. We got to do better as adults."

He reminds residents of Marion County, Indiana, that free gun locks are available at the Marion County Library. Please go get your free lock today.

Our thoughts are with the family of Andreas Woodland.
