AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk.  Actor Jesse Eisenberg to give kidney to stranger in December

Oscar-nominated actor Jesse Eisenberg announced Thursday that he will donate one of his kidneys to a stranger in an act known as an altruistic kidney donation. The 42-year-old actor, recognized for roles in The Social Network and the Now You See Me films, said the procedure is scheduled for mid-December.

“I’m actually donating my kidney in six weeks,” Eisenberg said during a television interview. He explained that his decision follows years of giving blood and supporting donation efforts, calling the upcoming kidney donation “so exciting” and “essentially risk-free and so needed.” Altruistic kidney donations involve giving a kidney to someone with advanced kidney disease whom the donor does not personally know; these non-directed donations can save lives for recipients anywhere on the transplant list. Eisenberg first considered donating about a decade ago, but was unable to connect with a program at the time. Recently, he spoke with a doctor friend who directed him to NYU Langone Health in New York City, where the surgery will take place. He also enrolled family members in a living kidney donor priority program to ensure they would have access if needed. As of September 2024, around 90,000 people were waiting for a kidney transplant in the United States.
