Amazon renames its Starlink rival to Amazon Leo

Amazon is giving its satellite internet project a new identity, rebranding Project Kuiper as "Amazon Leo," highlighting that its network operates through satellites in low Earth orbit.

The initiative, first announced in 2019, aims to provide high-speed internet to areas with limited connectivity using a proposed constellation of over 3,000 satellites capable of covering 95% of the world’s population. While Amazon has tested prototype satellites, developed a space laser mesh network, and unveiled user antennas, the company only launched the first 27 satellites in April 2025. In contrast, competitor Starlink launched its satellite internet service in beta in 2020 and has quickly expanded, securing deals with T-Mobile for satellite texting and partnerships with airlines for in-flight internet. The new Leo branding signals Amazon is moving to position its network as a standalone product, though it still lags behind Starlink.

Amazon has not announced a timeline for full availability of the service for consumers or businesses, but interested users can sign up on the Amazon Leo website for updates as the company progresses toward launch.
