 AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. South Sudanese authorities estimate the number of displaced in Jonglei at more than 180,000, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said last week.  ‎Anambra first lady urges collective action against gender-based violence

‎

‎The wife of Anambra State governor, Dr Nonye Soludo, has urged collective action, sustained campaigns, and effective measures to end gender-based violence in Nigeria.

‎

Dr Nonye ‎Soludo, founder of Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo, emphasised that the campaign must go beyond words and hashtags, calling for practical solutions and lasting narrative change.

‎

‎The Anambra First Lady expressed these views in a statement issued on Wednesday to mark the 2025 International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

‎

‎She noted that the day also signals the start of the 16-day Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, which concludes on 10 December—Human Rights Day.

‎

‎Nonye Soludo highlighted that empowering women and girls through education, accessible quality healthcare, job opportunities, and strengthening social institutions are vital steps to tackling gender-based violence. She further gave an insight on how to eliminate these gender based violence;

‎

‎“Eliminating gender-based discrimination is everyone’s responsibility—at home, in schools, workplaces, places of worship, and wherever human relationships exist. Every woman deserves protection and support to flourish.

‎

‎“Central to this campaign is breaking the silence of those suffering abuse.We can end gender-based violence by addressing the right concerns and taking effective measures. Empowering women and girls through education, healthcare access, job creation, and social institution strengthening is far more potent than we realise."

‎

‎“Thankfully, Anambra State recognises these challenges and has significantly shifted the narrative.”

 Tinubu announces arrival of 4 US attack helicopters President Bola Tinubu has stated that four attack helicopters will soon arrive in the country from the United States amid rising insecurity. Speaking at a meeting with a delegation of the Christian Association of Nigeria, led by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, at his Lagos residence, on Friday, Dec. 26, Tinubu revealed that the Federal Government had ordered four attack helicopters from the U.S, adding that they will arrive in the country “soon”.
