Ariana Grande tests positive for COVID following chaotic Wicked: For Good press appearances

Ariana Grande announced Thursday that she has tested positive for COVID-19, ending a tumultuous global press tour for "Wicked: For Good" that has been plagued by illness, travel disruptions, and security incidents. The 32-year-old singer and actress shared the news on Instagram Stories, posting a photo from her Tuesday appearance on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" with the caption "moments before Covid."

The announcement comes a day before the Universal Pictures sequel to 2024’s "Wicked" hits theaters on Friday. Grande stars as Glinda the Good Witch, with Cynthia Erivo reprising her role as Elphaba, in Jon M. Chu’s adaptation of the Broadway musical. Grande’s diagnosis forced her to cancel several promotional appearances, including a taped segment on "The Kelly Clarkson Show" and multiple Q&A sessions, with Erivo now appearing solo on the talk show. The press tour has been challenging: Grande and Erivo skipped red carpet interviews at the New York premiere after Erivo lost her voice due to illness, and earlier stops in São Paulo and Singapore faced safety and security issues, including a man rushing the red carpet in Singapore and later being jailed. Both actresses have previously tested positive for COVID during filming and promotion of the "Wicked" franchise. The tour has spanned São Paulo, Paris, London, Singapore, and New York over two weeks.
