Bolivian top court overturns former interim president’s sentence, orders her immediate release

The Bolivian Supreme Court of Justice on Wednesday overturned the 10-year prison sentence of former interim President Jeanine Áñez and ordered her immediate release.

The court also directed that Áñez, who has been detained for more than four years, face a political trial, in line with requests from her defense team. Court President Romer Saucedo said the decision, supported by seven of the nine justices, was based on “several arguments” and identified violations of due process during her original trial in ordinary courts.

Áñez was originally convicted for assuming the presidency during a contentious National Assembly session following the deadly 2019 protests that forced the resignation of then-President Evo Morales. The unrest, which left 37 people dead, followed Morales’ disputed re-election, which the Organization of American States had flagged as fraudulent.

The court’s ruling immediately allows for Áñez’s release, and her legal team stated they are preparing to begin the necessary procedures to secure her freedom.
