AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. Cortland, NY, students suspended for bringing BB gun to school as Halloween costume prop

Two students from Cortland Junior Senior High School were suspended Friday morning after one of them brought a BB gun to school as part of a Halloween costume, according to a statement from the district. The weapon was discovered in the student’s possession inside the school, prompting officials to alert police and notify families. The district described the incident as showing an “incredible lack of judgment” and a clear violation of school policy prohibiting weapons of any kind on campus.

Police said the student who brought the BB gun did so because his costume depicted someone who had been shot. Another student, realizing the potential consequences, offered to hide the gun in his backpack for the day. A third student, unsure if the weapon was real, reported the situation to school staff. Authorities quickly located the students, and the BB gun was surrendered without incident. Both students were immediately removed from school grounds and suspended pending a superintendent’s hearing. The district emphasized that the possession of any firearm, including BB guns, is strictly banned under its code of conduct. Police confirmed there were no threats made, and classes continued without disruption.
