Councillor Shot Dead by Unknown Gunmen During Anambra Governorship Election in Owerre Ezukala

A councillor was fatally shot by unknown gunmen on Saturday while attempting to vote at Owerre Ezukala Ward 1 in Owerre Ezukala community, Orumba South Local Government Area, amid the ongoing governorship election in Anambra State, according to multiple reports.

Sources close to the incident described the victim as a prominent local figure in the area. The attack occurred as voters queued at the polling unit, with the assailants reportedly arriving, opening fire on the councillor, and fleeing the scene immediately.

Eyewitness accounts circulated on social media amplified the reports. Facebook user Iyke Orji posted: “While voting in Owerre Ezukala Ward 1, unknown gunmen came in and shot a top person and left. The councillor of Owerre Ezukala was fatally shot by the men.”

However, the Anambra State Police Command has denied knowledge of any such incident. When contacted by journalists, spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga stated: “There is no such report before me. In fact, the state has been peaceful all along, and the atmosphere calm. There is no incident of violence in the state that I’m aware of at least for now.”

The election, which pits major candidates against each other in a tightly contested race, has proceeded across the state with security forces deployed to polling stations. Authorities have yet to issue an official confirmation or further details on the alleged shooting, as voting continues in other parts of Anambra.
