AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. South Sudanese authorities estimate the number of displaced in Jonglei at more than 180,000, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said last week. Dancing with the Stars finale earns highest ratings since 2016

“Dancing with the Stars” has wrapped up a standout season, delivering its biggest finale audience in nine years. The ABC series, based on the BBC format Strictly Come Dancing, saw Robert Irwin and Witney Carson claim the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy. The finale drew 9.24 million total viewers and earned a 2.15 rating among adults 18-49, marking the show’s highest demo numbers since Nyle DiMarco and Peta Murgatroyd won in 2015.

The ratings represent a significant jump from last season, which had 6.37 million viewers and a 1.14 rating in the 18-49 demo. ABC highlighted the achievement, noting that the finale delivered more adult 18-49 viewers in a single night than CBS’s entire primetime entertainment schedule for the previous week, and more than double the combined primetime entertainment on NBC. The network also posted its strongest numbers among adults 18-34 since 2011, capturing a 53% share in that demo—the largest for any broadcast entertainment telecast since the Friends finale in 2004.

The season itself performed strongly, with rising ratings since the premiere and a peak during a recent Wicked-themed episode. Fan engagement was also high, with more than 72 million votes cast during the finale—up 31% from the semifinals and over 125% from last season’s finale. Across the entire season, nearly half a billion votes were cast, demonstrating sustained audience enthusiasm throughout the competition.
