 Russian forces to stay in Mali to fight terrorism: Kremlin The Kremlin said on Thursday that Russian forces would stay in Mali to help the country's government battle terrorists following an offensive over the weekend by Tuareg-led separatists and terrorists. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the statement after being asked by a reporter how Russia responded to a purported statement from the terrorists saying they wanted Russia to leave Mali. "Russia's presence there is, in fact, due to the need identified by the current government. Russia will continue, including in Mali, to combat extremism, terrorism and other harmful phenomena and will continue to provide assistance to the current government," said Peskov, AFP reported. The Russian Defence Ministry had claimed on Tuesday that units of its African Corps prevented an attempted coup on April 25, 2026 in Mali.  DEFENCE HEADQUARTERS REFUTES VIDEO ON COMPULSORY RECRUITMENT


The defence headquarters has refuted a circulationg video depicting a mischievously cloned image of the Chief of Defence Staff General Olufemi Oluyede 

on alleged intent of the military to forcefully recruit young Nigerians from the age of 18 years into the military against their will.


 A statement by the director defence information brigadier General Samaila Uba said, the military remained a noble profession with thousands of patriotic Nigerians ready to willingly join its ranks as attested during various recruitment exercises into the 3 arms of the Nigerian military.


Brigadier General Uba noted that, the purported statement was never made by the Chief of Defence Staff or any of  the Service Chiefs and should be discarded by members of the public as a calculated attempt to undermine the high level professionalism of the Nigerian Military
