 AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. South Sudanese authorities estimate the number of displaced in Jonglei at more than 180,000, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said last week.  HONOURABLE MINISTER OF WORKS DONATES SPEED BOAT TO NSCDC LAGOS FOR  PROTECTION OF THIRD MAINLAND BRIDGE, OTHER FEDERAL BRIDGES.


Lagos State Commandant launches Speed Boat, inaugurates Marine and Infrastructure Protection Unit to combat illegal dredging under the bridges, excavation, encroachment and non - compliance ... 


The Honourable Minister of Works, His Excellency Engineer Dave Umahi in his magnanimity and unwavering commitment to supporting the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps ( NSCDC ) in  its duty to safeguarding vital public infrastructure has donated one ( 1 ) Speed Boat to the Marine and Infrastructure Protection Unit of the Lagos State Command.


2.The NSCDC Lagos State Command has today, Thursday, 20th November, 2025 immediately  implemented the directive of the Commandant General, NSCDC, Prof., Ahmed Abubakar Audi, PhD., mni, OFR, to all Commands to implement the  resolutions of the Office of the National Security Adviser's ( ONSA ) meeting on collaboration with stakeholders such as National Inland Waterways Authority ( NIWA ) and the Federal Ministry of Works ( FMW ) with the aim to protect Critical National Infrastructure in the state. 


3.The Lagos State Commandant sincerely  appreciated the Honourable Minister of Works, His Excellency , Engineer Dave Umahi for his support towards helping the Corps to fulfill its statutory mandate especially in Lagos State. He mentioned that the donation of the Speed Boat to help monitor activities on the marine corridor in Lagos is a morale booster for our gallant men, who have been dislodging the activities of unscrupulous elements under the bridges.


4..The State Commandant, NSCDC, Lagos State Command, Mr Keshinro Adedotun in line with the Commandant General's directive commissioned the new Speed Boat donated by the Federal Ministry of Works to the Marine and Infrastructure Protection Unit of the  Command today, Thursday.


5.The Lagos State Commandant also inaugurated the Marine and Infrastructure Protection Unit and its Commander Assistant Commandant of Corps Oloyede Emmanuel Ige.


6.The Commander, Marine and Infrastructure Protection Unit, ACC Oloyede Ige seized the opportunity to extend his profound appreciation to the Honourable Minster  of Works, Commandant General of NSCDC and the Lagos State Commandant for his appointment to take up this new challenge of ensuring an enhanced monitoring and patrolling of activities under the bridges in a bid to ensure adequate integrity and protection.


7.The Marine and Infrastructure Protection Unit  will definitely enhance security measures aimed at protecting and safeguarding critical bridge infrastructure against vandalism and threats like illegal dredging, excavation and encroachments of the Critical National Infrastructure in the state.


8.The Speed Boat no doubt will help to curb illegal and unauthorized dredging that often lead to the collapse of bridges, with tendencies of crippling the state and  the nation's economy at large .


9.While addressing news men   at the launching of the Marine and Infrastructure Protection Unit today, the Lagos State Commandant charged licenced dredgers to remain compliant with the law while carrying out their activities. He also gave very serious warnings to unrepentant perpetrators who get involved in illegal dredging, encroachment and excavation to desist from the act of be ready to face the full wrath of the law when caught.
