Makarfi Resigns As PDP BoT Secretary Over Zoning Concerns

A former Governor of Kaduna State, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, has officially stepped down as Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party’s Board of Trustees.

In his resignation letter, Makarfi cited zoning considerations, noting that the emergence of a new National Chairman from his own geopolitical zone made his continued stay inappropriate.

Over the weekend, former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Kabiru Turaki, was elected PDP National Chairman at the party’s 2025 national convention in Ibadan.

Makarfi’s resignation letter, dated November 17, 2025, was addressed to the BoT Chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara, and dispatched from his home in Kaduna.

He recalled that this decision had been pending for months, noting that he had earlier attempted to resign via the BoT WhatsApp platform but paused the move after being persuaded by the leadership to remain until the national convention was concluded.

“About two months ago, I had resigned as Secretary of the Board and posted it on the Board’s WhatsApp platform,” Makarfi wrote in the letter shared with The PUNCH.

According to him, Wabara personally appealed to him to stay on until the party produced a substantive chairman.

The former governor explained that he has always maintained that the BoT Secretary and the National Chairman should not come from the same geopolitical zone. With the new chairman emerging from the North-West, his own zone, he said stepping aside became necessary.

“The primary reason for my resignation then, and now, is my belief that the national chairman and the secretary should not come from the same geopolitical zone. Now that a chairman has emerged from the North-West, where I come from, it is appropriate to give him full space to function,” he wrote.

Makarfi added that his decision was driven by fairness and the need to maintain balance within the PDP’s leadership structure.

He formally thanked Wabara and other BoT members for their cooperation throughout his tenure.

“I truly appreciate the respectful working relationship we shared, and I thank all Board members for their support,” he said.
