 AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. South Sudanese authorities estimate the number of displaced in Jonglei at more than 180,000, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said last week. Makurdi was thrown into confusion today after a young man was reportedly stabbed to death by a woman during a domestic dispute. The incident, shared online by Linda Tarkighir, quickly sparked outrage and debate across social media.


According to the account, the confrontation began after the deceased allegedly asked the woman to help purchase some cooking items. What followed remains unclear, but the situation escalated sharply, ending in a fatal stabbing that has left family, friends, and residents in deep grief.


“This is the girl that stabbed my brother to death… just because they asked her to get cooking items? Wow. So this is not a dream? God,” a devastated relative wrote, struggling to process the tragedy.


The shocking nature of the incident has fueled a wave of reactions online, with many calling for a thorough investigation and justice for the victim.
