 AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. South Sudanese authorities estimate the number of displaced in Jonglei at more than 180,000, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said last week.  NIS Confirms Deadly Attack on Bakin Ruwa Checkpoint in Kebbi


The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) @nigimmigration has confirmed that unidentified gunmen attacked its Bakin Ruwa Checkpoint, under the Tuga Border Patrol Formation in #Kebbi State, on Thursday night.


According to a statement issued by the Service Public Relations Officer, Akinsola Akinlabi, the assault occurred around 10:00 p.m., resulting in the deaths of three immigration personnel. Operational assets and facilities at the checkpoint were also destroyed during the incident.


The Comptroller General of Immigration, Kemi Nandap, has directed an immediate tactical response.


 Measures include the deployment of reinforcements, intensified joint operations with sister security agencies, enhanced intelligence gathering along the Tuga axis, and increased patrols in the area.


The NIS called on members of the public to remain calm and continue providing useful information to security agencies as efforts to secure the border corridor are stepped up.
