Nnamdi Kanu Writes President Trump, Calls For US Inquiry In South-East Nigeria On Genocidal Killings
The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has written to United States President Donald Trump, urging him to launch an independent inquiry into what he described as “state-sponsored genocidal killings” of Christians and Igbo people in Nigeria’s South-East.
In the letter dated November 6, 2025, and delivered through the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, Kanu—who remains in solitary detention at the Department of State Services (DSS) headquarters—appealed to Trump to act on his recent declaration that the United States was prepared to “act militarily and cut aid if Nigeria fails to protect its Christian population.”
According to Kanu, the proposed inquiry should include access to mass graves, military logs, and testimonies from survivors.
Kanu wrote:
> “Your bold declaration on October 31, 2025, that the United States is prepared to act militarily and cut aid if Nigeria fails to protect its Christian population ignited hope in the hearts of millions who have been abandoned by the world.”
He noted that Christians in Nigeria now face an existential threat and alleged that the violence had extended beyond the North into the Igbo heartland, where Judeo-Christians were being “systematically exterminated under the guise of counter-terrorism.”
Kanu cited the 2016 Nkpor and Aba killings, the 2017 Operation Python Dance invasion of his home in Afaraukwu, and the 2020 Obigbo killings as evidence of a hidden genocide in the South-East. He referenced reports by Amnesty International, the UN Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial Executions, and local rights group Intersociety.
He highlighted that Amnesty International reported over 150 peaceful Christian worshippers killed, with bodies dumped in rivers, while the UN Special Rapporteur recorded dozens killed and injured in St. Edmund’s Catholic Church during worship. He further claimed that children were executed for singing “Sweet Jesus.”
Kanu alleged that the killings were carried out by the Nigerian military under then-Chief of Army Staff Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai, who was later appointed ambassador in 2021, which he claimed granted him diplomatic immunity.
He also recounted surviving four assassination attempts and his “extraordinary rendition” from Kenya on June 20, 2021—an act a Kenyan court later ruled illegal.
Kanu reminded Trump that although Nigeria’s Court of Appeal discharged and acquitted him in October 2022, the government refused to release him.
He added that the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention declared his detention unlawful and politically motivated.
In the letter, Kanu called for:
1. A U.S.-led inquiry into massacres of Judeo-Christians in Eastern Nigeria.
2. Emergency congressional hearings on the alleged Igbo Christian genocide.
3. Magnitsky sanctions on top Nigerian officials, including former Army Chief Buratai and former DSS Director-General Yusuf Bichi.
4. A supervised referendum on self-determination for the Igbo people, describing it as the only peaceful solution.
Kanu appealed to Trump, saying:
> “History will judge us by what we do when genocide knocks. You have the power to stop a second Rwanda in Africa. One tweet, one sanction, one inquiry could save millions.”
